We’re shocked (and kind of delighted) that our art stirred up a debate. WHAT IS ART? New AI tools can generate images fast, and some people consider them worse than anything else. They claim it’s theft, and I get why—most models are trained on scraped work, and that’s messy.
With help from friends, I generated AI images using my own drawings as inputs—so it felt less like stealing and more like using a new tool. To me, AI is a tool like any other art supply. Yes, AI art can be art… but like any tool, it has limits, and leaning on it too hard can become a crutch.
Personally, I’d love a world where the training data is only public domain or museum archives, not random artists scraped through dubious legal gymnastics.
